Police in Buhweju District, western Uganda, are waiting for a court order to exhume the body of a 53-year-old man suspected to have been murdered and secretly buried in his bedroom by his wife.

Authorities arrested a 46-year-old woman in connection with the death of her husband, Patrick Bainomugisha, who was allegedly killed on the night of April 13, 2025, in Kaniga 1 Village. Preliminary investigations point to a domestic dispute as the cause.

According to Michael Tindyebwa, chairperson of the local security committee, the suspect confessed at the police station that she had unintentionally struck her husband on the back of the neck with a club during an argument, resulting in his death. She then buried him in their bedroom.

Rwengwe Sub-county chairperson Frank Mukama said that Bainomugisha’s disappearance since Easter raised concerns, prompting residents to gather at his home. Police have since secured the property as they await a court order to allow the exhumation.

Buhweju Resident District Commissioner Pulkeria Muhindo stressed the importance of following legal procedures. She also urged family leaders to play a more active role in preventing domestic violence, noting the suspect claimed her husband had failed to provide for their children’s school fees.

Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson SP Marcial Tumusiime confirmed the suspect’s confession and added that she was arrested on April 14 in Mbarara City while trying to flee. She remains in custody at Buhweju Police Station as legal steps are taken to exhume the body.
