“Bobi Wine Never Visited Ssegirinya in Prison” – Former Aide Luwemba

Muhammad Luwemba Lusswa, a former personal assistant to the late Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, has publicly criticized National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, for allegedly failing to support Ssegirinya while he was imprisoned.

Speaking on Sanyuka Television on Friday, Luwemba claimed that during the nearly two years Ssegirinya and fellow MP Allan Ssewanyana spent in jail over murder charges linked to machete killings in Masaka, Kyagulanyi never visited them.

“The party president never showed up at the prison. Even Ssewanyana can confirm this. I was there constantly and saw who came to visit,” Luwemba said.

He further alleged that Ssegirinya died feeling abandoned by the party, stating, “He passed away wanting nothing to do with NUP. May God strike me down if I’m lying.”

However, Luwemba’s remarks are disputed by documented evidence showing Kyagulanyi visiting Kigo Prison to check on the jailed legislators. During one such visit, Kyagulanyi addressed the media, offering updates on their situation and confirming his presence at the facility.

Moreover, Luwemba’s claim that Ssegirinya had distanced himself from NUP is contradicted by the late MP’s own public statements before his death, in which he expressed gratitude for the party’s support—crediting his NUP affiliation for helping him win his parliamentary seat.

Luwemba’s comments come in the wake of fresh tensions within the opposition, following accusations from Kyagulanyi and Ssewanyana that former Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, played a role in the MPs’ imprisonment.
