Her father, George William Jjunju, said he had not been given a clear explanation for his daughter’s death. He said he noticed bruises on her body but was told by school administrators that she may have suffered a sudden illness.
Mr Jjunju said he was unaware of any medical condition his daughter had and called for a thorough investigation to establish the exact cause of death. He questioned reports that she was taken to hospital when she was already unresponsive.
Kalungu Resident District Commissioner Seifu Katabaazi said the dormitory had been closed as inquiries continue. He added that preliminary findings suggested the school was not registered with the district education authorities and that conditions in the dormitory were unsatisfactory.
Mr Katabaazi said investigators found triple-decker beds, which are not permitted, and described the level of hygiene as poor. School administrators have been given one week to address the concerns before the facility can be reassessed.
He also confirmed that the school matron had been arrested to assist police with the investigation.
Authorities say a post-mortem examination will help determine the cause of death as investigations proceed.
