76-year-old man Sets Himself on Fire in Kwania over Land Dispute

Police in Kwania District are investigating the death of a 76-year-old man who set himself on fire following a dispute with his family over the sale of customary land.

The man, identified as William Ongeng, is reported to have sold a portion of family land for 1.8 million Ugandan shillings in order to clear a personal debt. However, relatives allegedly blocked the buyer from taking possession of the land, prompting complaints that led to his arrest.

Residents say Mr Ongeng was released from custody on Monday, 23 February 2026, after assuring authorities that he would refund the money. According to local accounts, he was unable to repay the amount and set himself alight two days later.

A letter said to have been left behind accuses his daughter and grandson of preventing him from selling the land to settle the debt.

One resident, James Adoko, said the deceased had also sought permission from family members to mortgage a house to raise funds but was unsuccessful. He suggested the ongoing disagreement left him distressed.

Another local leader, Tom Odyambo, who serves on the LC1 committee, said there had been long-standing tensions within the family. He alleged that Mr Ongeng had previously sold land to finance alcohol consumption, which had angered his children and contributed to their opposition.

Kwania District Police Commander Allison Arinda confirmed that an investigation has been opened to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

If you or someone you know is struggling with distress or suicidal thoughts, local authorities and health professionals advise seeking support from family members, community leaders or medical services.
