Explosion at Buziga Country Resort Sauna Leaves Three Hospitalised

At least three people were injured on Sunday evening after an explosion ripped through a sauna at Buziga Country Resort in Kampala, police have said.

The blast occurred at about 8:30pm in Upper Buziga, Makindye Division, according to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire.

Among those hurt was 69-year-old Hajjati Mastula, the vice chairperson of Katuuso village, who suffered severe burns to her chest and back. Two other women, Zahara Nakaweesi and Mamrum Aisha, sustained extensive burns, with Nakaweesi also suffering a broken leg. The victims were first taken to Kiruddu Hospital before being transferred to Nsambya and Mulago hospitals for further treatment.

Police said the explosion caused major structural damage, leaving part of the sauna building collapsed, with cracks in the remaining walls and broken glass scattered across the site.

“Preliminary findings show it was a huge explosion, but the exact cause is not yet known,” Mr Owoyesigyire said, adding that the area had been cordoned off while investigations continue.

Authorities said experts from the National Building Review Board will be consulted to examine the construction of the sauna, its temperature regulation, and other safety aspects as part of the inquiry into possible negligence.

Similar incidents involving sauna explosions have previously been reported in Kampala, with several people injured in recent years.
