Police Arrests Security Guard Accused of Killing Employer and Stealing SUV

Ugandan police have arrested a private security guard accused of killing his employer before fleeing with cash and a luxury vehicle.

The suspect, identified as Hilary Byaruhanga, an employee of Don World Security Limited, was captured in Kanungu District after days on the run. He is accused of shooting dead 53-year-old businessman Anthony Mutinisa, the proprietor of Mutinisa Motors, on Sunday evening.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the arrest, saying the victim’s vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 (registration number UA 769 BQ), was recovered in Katwe Cell, Kihihi Town Council.

Byaruhanga was arrested alongside another man, Mark Akampa, whose involvement in the crime is still being investigated. Authorities believe their detention will shed more light on the motive behind the killing.

Preliminary findings suggest Byaruhanga disabled CCTV cameras, stole cash, and fled with the SUV shortly after the shooting. Investigators say he had developed a close working relationship with Mutinisa, receiving wages from both the security company and directly from the businessman. He had also been trusted with errands, trained to drive, and given access to sensitive company operations.

Colleagues told police the guard sent a text message shortly after the incident, saying: “Something bad has happened.”

The stolen vehicle was later tracked near the Uganda–DR Congo border, sparking fears the suspect may have attempted to escape into Congo. Military intelligence is assisting police in ongoing inquiries.

Investigators are also scrutinising the suspect’s past activities and communications to establish whether he acted alone or as part of a wider scheme.

Police have appealed to members of the public with information to come forward. The recovered SUV will be handed back to the victim’s family, while the cash retrieved is still being verified.
