Speaker Among to Face Off with Kadaga in NRM CEC Race

Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has declared her intention to contest for the position of Second National Vice Chairperson (female) on the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Her announcement sets up a high-profile contest with her predecessor, Rebecca Kadaga, who has also expressed interest in retaining the seat.

Speaking at a political function in Pallisa District over the weekend, Ms Among said she was responding to repeated calls from supporters to enter the race.

“I have been encouraged by many people to stand. That support is what has pushed me to officially announce that I will contest,” she told journalists on the sidelines of the event.

The Speaker defended her suitability for the role, pointing to her leadership record. “I have been tested. I have managed Parliament for five years without turbulence, and I am a strong mobiliser,” she said.

Ms Kadaga, who currently serves as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, has previously stated in interviews that she remains committed to holding the same position she has occupied since the party’s founding.

When contacted for comment on the new development, NRM Electoral Commission chairperson Tanga Odoi said, “Among has the right as a citizen of Uganda to contest for any position she wishes. No one can stop her.”

The race is expected to draw significant attention as two of the country’s most prominent female political figures face off for influence within the party’s top leadership structure.
