Man Arrested Over Defilement of Four-Year-Old Nursery Chils in Rubirizi

Police in Uganda’s Rubirizi District have arrested a 17-year-old boy accused of defiling a four-year-old pupil from St Peter’s Nursery School.

The incident is reported to have taken place on 20 August, when the suspect—identified by police only as Justus and a resident of Kyeibumba II Village in Ryeru Sub-County—allegedly lured the child into a bedroom.

“The crime scene was processed and the suspect is in custody. The victim has undergone a medical examination to support the investigation,” said SP Apollo Tayebwa, spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Regional Police. He added that updates on the case would be shared as inquiries progress.

Tayebwa noted that dealing with juvenile suspects remains particularly complex. “We strongly condemn such incidents and call on parents and guardians to take extra measures to protect children,” he said.

The arrest comes against a backdrop of high levels of sexual offences against minors in Uganda. Police figures show that in 2024, 12,312 cases of defilement were recorded nationwide—a slight drop from 12,771 the previous year. Out of these, 8,240 were categorized as defilement, while 7,072 were treated as aggravated defilement.

Authorities say investigations into the Rubirizi case are ongoing, and the suspect will face legal proceedings once inquiries are complete.
