Voters in Uganda’s Kagoma Constituency have rejected incumbent Member of Parliament Moses Walyomu, accusing him of neglecting key development priorities in favor of what they describe as superficial political gestures.
Mr. Walyomu, an independent MP with ties to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), was defeated in the party’s recent primary elections by Fredrick Munirwa—a perennial contender who has previously stood for the seat twice. This time, Munirwa secured the NRM flag, buoyed by growing public dissatisfaction with Walyomu’s performance.

Local residents criticized the outgoing MP for failing to address pressing needs in the areas of infrastructure, education, healthcare, and youth employment.
“We didn’t send Walyomu to Parliament to distribute hoes. We already have those at home,” said Mbudu Raston, a farmer in Butagaya Sub-county’s Mabira Village. “What we need are modern tools and agricultural inputs—not outdated handouts.”
Businesswoman Sarah Kateme expressed similar concerns, highlighting poor service delivery across the constituency. “We want good roads, functional schools, equipped health centers, and jobs for young people—not slogans and empty promises,” she said.
Others accused Mr. Walyomu of fostering division and remaining largely absent from critical development matters.
“He only shows up at funerals,” said Sula Mukalazi, a resident. “When it comes to development, he’s nowhere to be seen.”
In defense, Mr. Walyomu disputed the legitimacy of the NRM primaries, alleging voter bribery, intimidation, and manipulation in favor of his rival. He has since vowed to run as an independent in the upcoming general elections.
Addressing his supporters on Monday, Mr. Walyomu said he would continue to campaign, insisting that the voice of the people must be respected.
“We will not allow ourselves to be silenced by the system,” he said. “I may not carry the party card, but I will stand firm and continue to support President Museveni as I seek re-election.”
Meanwhile, Fredrick Munirwa, now the NRM flag bearer for Kagoma, said he remains confident ahead of the general polls.
“The voters have already spoken,” Munirwa said. “They want leadership that delivers results—not conflict and rhetoric. We will stay focused on serving the people of Kagoma.”
Mr Walyomu is seeking a third term in Parliament.
