In a major political shift within Butaleja District, all incumbent Members of Parliament under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) lost their party flags during the recent primaries. The unexpected outcome saw Woman MP Florence Andiru Nebanda, Bunyole East MP Yusuf Mutembuli, and Bunyole West MP Geoffrey Eric Mutiwa all defeated, signaling growing voter dissatisfaction and a strong desire for change ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The vote-counting process, which stretched into the early hours of Friday, was closely followed and generated mixed emotions—jubilation for the winners and dismay among supporters of the outgoing legislators. New contenders, including Annet Sarah Logose, Moses Musamba Nagwomu, and James Waluswaka, emerged victorious, each securing the party flag in their respective constituencies.
While the primaries were largely peaceful according to local NRM officials, the process was not without controversy. Allegations of voter bribery and procedural delays were reported in some areas. Some defeated candidates, notably Mr. Mutiwa and Mr. Mutembuli, expressed dissatisfaction with the process and vowed to run as independents, describing the primaries as flawed.
Political analysts and residents have attributed the incumbents’ defeat to unmet public expectations and a demand for fresh leadership. The party’s district leadership and newly elected flag bearers have since called for unity and calm, urging supporters to rally behind the NRM as preparations for the 2026 general elections gain momentum.
