Police in Kampala have arrested 21 people in connection with a series of daylight robberies and assaults that occurred during a major political event, highlighting growing concerns over public safety at high-profile gatherings.
The incidents took place on June 28, 2025, during President Yoweri Museveni’s nomination day, disrupting activity near key city areas such as the National Theatre and UBC roundabout. Victims—including pedestrians, boda boda riders, vendors, and motorists—reported being attacked and robbed in what authorities believe were coordinated ambushes.

Most of the suspects, who were reportedly dressed in yellow T-shirts often associated with the ruling NRM party, were part of crowds heading to the nomination venue. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango confirmed that CCTV footage was instrumental in tracking the suspects, leading to their arrest at various locations.
Currently held at Central and Wandegeya police stations, the suspects face preliminary charges of robbery and assault. One individual sustained injuries while fleeing arrest and is receiving medical treatment under custody.
While investigations are ongoing and more arrests are anticipated, police have urged additional victims to come forward and assist in building cases. Authorities emphasized that criminal acts—regardless of political affiliation—will not be tolerated.
The attacks sparked widespread criticism online, with many Ugandans questioning security arrangements and the potential misuse of political events for criminal activity. Though the police have not directly linked the perpetrators to the NRM, the use of party symbols by the suspects has intensified public scrutiny.
In response, security forces have increased patrols and presence in central Kampala and pledged to work closely with event organizers to enhance safety at political functions. The developments underscore the need for better crowd control and preventative measures as Uganda heads toward the 2026 general elections.
