Ofwono Opondo Resigns as Gov’t Spokesperson to Contest for MP Seat

Ofwono Opondo, the longtime executive director of the Uganda Media Centre and government spokesperson, has officially stepped down to contest for a parliamentary seat representing older persons in Uganda’s eastern region.

Announcing his resignation via his official X account on Thursday, Opondo said his departure concludes 26 years of service in senior government and party positions. These include his role as spokesperson for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and his involvement in President Museveni’s election task forces since 2001.

“After 12 years as executive director of Uganda Media Centre and government spokesperson, and years of service with Museveni’s election task forces and NRM until 2015, I exited office to run for MP representing Older Persons Eastern Region in the 12th Parliament,” he posted.

Opondo’s bid for Parliament follows his recent victory in the NRM grassroots elections, where he was elected chairperson of the Elders’ League in his village—a position that enhances his influence within party structures as he seeks a legislative seat.

Renowned for his direct and often combative communication style, Opondo has been a key figure in shaping government messaging, especially during critical national events. Though he has not yet unveiled the full details of his campaign, his deep roots in the NRM and wealth of experience in public service are likely to support his ambitions.

The seat for older persons is part of Uganda’s affirmative action measures aimed at ensuring representation for marginalized groups, including older adults, youth, and persons with disabilities.

As the NRM’s internal electoral processes continue—with parish-level voting scheduled for May 12—Opondo’s next steps will depend on navigating the often complex Electoral College system.
