One of the suspects in the attempted robbery of Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) in Kavumba, Wakiso District, has told police the crime was motivated by months of unpaid salaries.
Justin Okello, a private guard from GKA Security Company, surrendered after his accomplice, Emmanuel Okao, was fatally shot by police during the Sunday incident. Both had been assigned to guard the same DTB branch they tried to rob.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the duo resisted arrest and hid in the bank’s ceiling while armed, prompting officers to open fire.
Investigations show Okao had instructed his family to return to their village, claiming he was headed to the Democratic Republic of Congo, which police suspect was a cover for a planned escape post-robbery.
Okello later confessed that the robbery was deliberate, claiming financial frustration:
“We’ve been guarding this bank without pay for a long time. We decided to rob it so we could pay ourselves,” he told police.
He added that they removed their uniforms to make the robbery appear like an outside job.
Two loaded firearms were recovered at the scene, and police are now working with GKA Security Company to investigate the guards’ wage claims.
