Speaker Among to Lead Ugandan Delegation to Vatican for Pope Francis’s Funeral

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, will represent Uganda at the burial of Pope Francis at the Vatican on Saturday, April 26, 2025.

Captain Mike Mukula confirmed that the Speaker, a long-time acquaintance of the Pope, received an official invitation from the Vatican to attend the funeral Mass, which will be led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.

Mukula added that President Museveni appointed Speaker Among to head the Ugandan delegation, highlighting the strong diplomatic ties between Uganda and the Holy See.

Among has previously met with Pope Francis on several occasions, engaging in discussions on key global challenges facing Africa, such as youth empowerment and climate change. She described the late Pope as “a devoted spiritual shepherd who made a lasting impact on the global Church.”

The funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 AM at St. Peter’s Square, with the burial to follow at the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

Her participation reaffirms Uganda’s deep connection with the Vatican.
