NUP Gives ‘Rebel MPs’ 30 Days to Apologize

The deputy president of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has urged party president Robert Kyagulanyi to reconsider backing members who have consistently skipped party meetings and events.

This call came during a party training session held on Tuesday for NUP members from the Buganda region as part of preparations for the 2026 general elections. Notably, several Members of Parliament affiliated with NUP were absent from the session.

Among the absentees were Kimanya-Kabonera MP Abed Bwanika, Kawempe South MP Bashir Kaziibwe Mbaziira, and Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga. Also missing were Njeru Municipality MP Jimmy Lwanga and Bukoto South MP Dr. Twaha Kagabo, who have recently voiced support for the Patriotic League of Uganda.

In his speech, Kivumbi urged Kyagulanyi to give the absent MPs a 30-day ultimatum to explain their absence or issue a formal apology, warning that failure to do so should result in the withdrawal of the party’s support for their candidacies in the 2026 elections.

“I appeal to you, our president, to start identifying alternative candidates for these constituencies so we can plan accordingly. Let’s give them a month to respond, or we move forward without them,” Kivumbi said.

He also recommended taking a firm stance against members who express allegiance to President Museveni or his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

“Can we afford more years under Museveni? We supported you as our candidate in Parliament—how then can you turn around and support Museveni or worse, Gen. Muhoozi?” Kivumbi asked.

The party said the training session was aimed at equipping members to tackle critical national concerns ahead of the 2026 elections.

Efforts by Nile Post to reach MPs Mpuuga and Bwanika for a comment on their position within the party were unsuccessful.
