Police Suspend NUP Mobilisation Trainings Following Mbale Traffic Clash

The Uganda Police Force has put a halt to the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) upcoming regional mobilization training meetings, citing persistent breaches of public order and traffic regulations by the party’s supporters.

In a letter dated April 16, 2025, addressed to NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, police faulted the party for failing to comply with operational guidelines previously communicated during political engagements.

The decision stems from an incident on April 14, 2025, in which NUP supporters allegedly obstructed traffic in Iganga Town while returning from a mobilization event in Mbale.

“Mobilization efforts must not compromise public safety or endanger the lives of other road users,” the letter emphasized, accusing the party of ignoring prior directives issued on May 28 and July 12, 2024.

As a result, the planned meetings set for April 17 at Ankole Resort in Bushenyi and April 24 at Palm Garden Restaurant and Guest House in Gulu have been suspended indefinitely.

The communication, signed by police spokesperson Simon Peter Okoshi on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, was also copied to the Regional Police Commanders of Greater Bushenyi and Aswa West.

Authorities have yet to outline when or under what terms the meetings may resume.
