Kenyan National Remanded for Stealing Passenger’s Bag at Entebbe Airport

Even at the airport, as we welcome strangers and visitors, Uganda doesn’t surprise. A 28-year-old Kenyan has been remanded to prison on allegations of stealing a bag belonging to a passenger at Entebbe International Airport.

Rosemary Maina Nyambura, a Kenyan woman and resident of Bweyogerere in Kampala District, was on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, arraigned before Senior Magistrate Grade One, Edgar Tibayeita Tusiime, at the Entebbe Chief Magistrate’s Court and charged with theft.

She went on to deny the charges and was remanded to Kigo prison until April 16, 2025.

The charge sheet says Nyambura and others still at large, on March 30, 2025 at Entebbe International Airport’s car park arrivals in Wakiso District stole a bag containing an HP laptop, laptop charger, eyeglasses, and German Passport, among others, belonging to a passenger.

Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA)’s manager public affairs, Mr Vianney Luggya, confirmed that there was a case of organized theft involving two Kenyan nationals and a Ugandan who connived to steal a bag from a passenger, who had just arrived and was departing the car park at Entebbe International Airport.

“The victim was a foreigner who had just arrived in the country, but had a driver who was helping him to load luggage into the car. The lady distracted the driver by asking him uncoordinated questions, and in the process the other two accomplices stole the bag, which contained various items. This led to the identification and subsequent arrest of the Kenyan lady, who was taken to court for prosecution,” he narrated.

He appealed to users of the facilities at Entebbe International Airport to desist from engaging in such acts at an international airport, because there is a system in place with security on the ground.

“Whenever such cases are reported, we conduct the necessary investigations and apprehend the culprits. I, therefore, appeal to any passengers, who may unfortunately fall victim to such tricksters, to immediately report so that investigations can be carried out to apprehend the culprits and recover the lost items,” Mr Luggya said.
