A family dispute in Mukono has resulted in the arrest of a 45-year-old woman accused of attempting to steal her own daughter’s one-month-old baby.
Bridget Nalweyiso, 22, filed a report at Wantoni Police Station after a heated confrontation with her mother, Barbra Babirye, who allegedly refused to return the infant.
According to Nalweyiso, Babirye initially accompanied her to Mukono General Hospital for childbirth and later convinced her to leave the baby in her care. However, she soon began claiming the child as her own, even introducing the baby to her new husband under false pretenses.
“I was devastated when I heard she was telling people the baby was hers,” Nalweyiso said tearfully. “She even solicited money from her husband by pretending the child belonged to her.”
Local residents, who had seen Nalweyiso pregnant, expressed shock at Babirye’s actions.
“We all knew it was Nalweyiso’s baby,” said Kimbowa Sonko, chairperson of the Basiima Kikooza cell. “When Barbra insisted the child was hers, no one believed her.”
Following the complaint, Mukono Division Police arrested Babirye on child theft charges. The case has sparked widespread debate in the community about trust and family betrayal.
Investigations are ongoing.
