The National Unity Platform (NUP) has unveiled its selection process for choosing a flagbearer in the upcoming Kawempe North by-election, combining a public debate and a constituency survey to determine the party’s candidate.
NUP Secretary General, Lewis Rubongoya, stated that the 10 aspirants will participate in a public debate, which will contribute 50% to the final decision.

“To prevent chaos, we will allow only a limited number of supporters for each candidate at the debate,” Rubongoya noted.
The remaining 50% will be determined through a ground survey conducted by the party’s Election Management Committee to gauge the candidates’ popularity and suitability among Kawempe North voters.
By the nomination deadline on Friday, 10 aspirants had been confirmed for the NUP ticket. They include:
- Luwemba Lusswa Muhammad, former aide to the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya
- Luyimbazi Nalukoola, a lawyer
- Umar Magara
- Saulo Kulya Zziwa
- Serunkuuma Salim (Mafu Mafu)
- Kakyika Fredrick
- Dr. Charles Rubagumya
- Eng. Ssenkungu Kenneth
- Mathias Mulumba
- Moses Nsereko
The Kawempe North parliamentary seat was declared vacant following the passing of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9, 2025.
Meanwhile, the Kazo-Angola councillor position also became vacant after the 2022 death of Yusuf Yakubu Kiggundu, who was involved in a fatal road accident while campaigning for an NUP candidate in Omoro District.
Mercy Walukamba, chairperson of the NUP Electoral Management Committee, confirmed that two candidates had been cleared to contest for the Kazo-Angola Ward councillor seat in Kawempe Division.
According to the Electoral Commission, campaign meetings will run from Friday, February 28, to Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with voting scheduled for Thursday, March 13, 2025.
As the by-election draws closer, competition for NUP’s endorsement is expected to be intense, as the party seeks a strong candidate to retain the seat once held by Ssegirinya.
