Makerere introduces digital transcripts and certificates for graduates

Makerere University has unveiled a new electronic system that allows graduates to access their academic transcripts and certificates online while enabling employers and other authorised institutions to verify the documents digitally.

The innovation is part of the university’s ongoing digital transformation agenda aimed at improving service delivery and making academic records more accessible and secure.

Academic Registrar Prof. Mukadasi Buyinza said the system will eliminate the need for graduates to frequently visit the university in search of certified copies of their academic documents.

“The new e-transcripts and certificates will enable graduates to access their academic documents electronically while allowing employers and other third parties to verify their authenticity online with the graduate’s permission,” Buyinza said.

He noted that the platform is expected to enhance the credibility of Makerere’s academic records while simplifying verification for employers and institutions.

Buyinza also revealed that Makerere has fully embraced blended learning by combining physical and online teaching. He added that the university is developing fully online degree programmes to allow students from different parts of the world to study remotely.

Beginning with the 2026/2027 academic year, Makerere will also introduce revised curricula based on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET), a move aimed at equipping graduates with practical skills that match labour market demands.

Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe dismissed reports suggesting the university lacks sufficient teaching staff.

According to Nawangwe, Makerere has about 32,000 students and nearly 1,400 teaching staff, including around 1,100 PhD holders, giving the institution a lecturer-to-student ratio of 1:21.

“The university continues to make significant strides in building a robust and motivated workforce through strategic recruitment, appointments and promotions,” he said.

He added that the university continues to recruit staff to replace those leaving through retirement and natural attrition while strengthening academic leadership through regular appointments and promotions.
