Uganda Airlines Launches Direct Entebbe–London Flights

Uganda Airlines officially launched its direct flight service between Entebbe International Airport (EBB) and London Gatwick Airport (LGW) on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in its international growth strategy and enhancing air connectivity between Uganda and the United Kingdom.

The inaugural flight took off from Entebbe at 10:15 AM on May 18, 2025, and is expected to land at Gatwick at 4:55 PM local time. The non-stop route will operate four times a week—on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—with return flights scheduled for the same day.

The route is serviced by Uganda Airlines’ modern Airbus A330-800neo, known for its long-range comfort, fuel efficiency, and premium passenger amenities.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki said the route strategically links Uganda to one of the busiest global aviation hubs.

“Return flights are timed to offer seamless connections to key destinations across East, Central, and West Africa, strengthening our African network,” she noted.

The launch aligns with growing trade and tourism ties between Uganda and the UK. According to the British High Commission in Kampala, total bilateral trade reached UGX 4.2 trillion (£860 million) in 2023, with Uganda exporting goods worth UGX 11.2 trillion (£2.3 billion) to the UK over the past five years.

Minister of Works and Transport Gen. Katumba Wamala hailed the development as a vital link for commerce and cultural exchange.

“This flight is more than a new route—it’s a bridge connecting business, investment, and people. It fulfills President Museveni’s 2015 vision to revive Uganda Airlines as a direct connector to global markets, eliminating layovers and enabling faster movement of people and goods,” he said.

He added that the UK remains a key source of tourists to Uganda, and the new service is expected to boost visitor numbers and tourism revenue.

Airbus Africa and Middle East President Gabriel Semelas congratulated Uganda Airlines on the achievement.

“We are proud to see the A330-800neo powering this historic route. It highlights the aircraft’s reliability, efficiency, and premium performance, helping Uganda Airlines expand intercontinental services while offering top-tier comfort,” Semelas said.
