The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) has officially nominated Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Mugisha Muntu as its presidential flag bearer for Uganda’s 2026 general elections.
The nomination took place on Friday, 25 July 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Bukoto, Kampala—just one day before the close of ANT’s internal nomination window. This marks Muntu’s second bid for the presidency, having previously contested in 2021.

Speaking after his nomination, the former army commander highlighted the importance of political unity among opposition parties, noting that ANT has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) to present joint candidates at all levels, including the presidential race.
“Our agreement with PFF is rooted in a shared goal—to consolidate efforts by backing one candidate across various levels. Our next step is to engage the National Unity Platform (NUP),” Muntu told reporters. He expressed optimism that if NUP joins the alliance, discussions would continue on potentially bringing more opposition groups into the fold.
While acknowledging that full alignment on joint candidates may not be achieved, Muntu stressed the value of collaboration on broader election-related strategies. “Even where we can’t agree on fielding a single candidate, we can still coordinate on influencing electoral processes and working with the Electoral Commission to strengthen communication and voter protection,” he said.
Muntu appealed to other opposition leaders to focus on building unity rather than competing against one another, arguing that fragmentation weakens efforts to achieve political change.
Dan Mugarura, ANT’s interim Electoral Affairs Coordinator, confirmed that Muntu is currently the only presidential aspirant under the party’s banner. The party’s internal nomination process, which began on 2 May 2025, is being carried out through district-level registrars and will conclude on 27 July.
While the final tally of nominated candidates remains unclear, Mugarura said updates from district offices are expected by 30 July. In Kampala, ANT has already received nomination forms from approximately 15 parliamentary aspirants and 10 councillors.
The ANT-PFF alliance is part of a growing push among Uganda’s opposition groups to build coalitions ahead of the 2026 elections, with calls already extended to Bobi Wine’s NUP to consider joining the effort.
