Operations at GM Sugar Factory in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, were disrupted following a fatal workplace accident that claimed the life of a factory supervisor.
Samuel Kasumba lost his life after being pulled into a running sugar mill during his night shift. The tragic incident occurred around 3:50 a.m. on March 12, 2025, according to police reports.

Kasumba was reportedly cleaning an active boiler when the machine suddenly dragged him in, killing him instantly. His body was later transported to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
In response to the accident, factory workers staged a protest, citing frequent workplace incidents and safety concerns. Reports indicate that at least three workers have died at the factory over the past year, with several others suffering injuries.
Njeru Division police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kasumba’s death and are assessing the factory’s adherence to safety protocols.
Authorities have called on factory management to implement stricter safety measures and comply with industrial regulations to prevent further tragedies.
