Students injured as another school bus crashes in Kamuli

Several students have been injured after a school bus collided with a sugarcane truck in Kamuli district, adding to growing concerns over the safety of school transport following a series of recent crashes.

The accident happened at about 9:30pm on Friday in Busota, near Busota Health Centre III, as learners were returning from an educational tour.

According to Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson Samson Lubega, the bus belonged to Bugaya Secondary School but was transporting 31 students of Nalango Secondary School. The vehicle collided with a sugarcane truck that was travelling from Kamuli towards Jinja City.

Lubega said the bus was carrying 20 boys and 11 girls at the time of the collision.

“No one died, but students sustained serious injuries. Some have been admitted to Busota Health Centre, while those with serious injuries were taken to bigger health facilities. We have not verified the exact numbers so far,” Lubega said.

He added that several learners suffered fractures and other serious injuries, with some reported to be in critical condition.

Preliminary police investigations suggest the crash was caused by the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to overtake at high speed without a clear view of the road ahead.

The latest accident comes a day after the government suspended all school trips and educational excursions following a deadly crash involving pupils of King David Junior School in Ndejje.

More than 20 pupils were killed and several others injured on Thursday evening after their school bus was involved in an accident at Chepkwatit Slope in Kapchorwa district while they were returning from a study tour.

The Kamuli crash is also the latest in a string of school transport accidents recorded in recent days.

On 14 July, an Isuzu bus carrying 73 students of St Paul Secondary School Katakwi crashed into a stationary Mercedes-Benz trailer along the Mbale-Iganga Highway in Bugweri district. The 68-year-old driver died instantly, while 15 students sustained serious injuries.

In a separate incident, a bus transporting students of Mwebaze High School-Kakiri to Jinja was hit by a passenger train at a railway crossing in Mukono district, leaving one person dead and several learners injured.

The succession of crashes has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety measures for school transport, including mandatory vehicle inspections, the deployment of qualified drivers and compliance with traffic regulations during educational trips.
