President Yoweri Museveni has suspended cabinet and parliamentary sessions to enable members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to fully participate in the party’s grassroots elections.
In a statement released Sunday, Museveni announced that Monday’s cabinet meeting and Tuesday’s parliamentary plenary would be paused. He asked Speaker Anita Among to accommodate the change, ensuring ministers and MPs can join the village-level electoral process.

“I urge all NRM members to be present at their village centers by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025,” Museveni said. “Members will verify names in the NRM registers and elect LCI chairperson flagbearers along with other village-level leaders.”
The president emphasized the elections must take place strictly between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. He noted he would personally attend the verification exercise in his home village of Rwakitura, while First Lady Janet Museveni would participate in her native village of Ireenga, Ntungamo District.
However, Museveni made it clear he would remain neutral in the process. “As NRM chairman, I support the members’ democratic choices. I won’t endorse any particular candidate,” he said.
The grassroots elections form part of broader preparations for Uganda’s 2026 general elections. Political parties have begun implementing their electoral roadmaps to select candidates for various positions.
Recently, both the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the Democratic Party (DP) concluded the nomination period for presidential flagbearer hopefuls. DP President Norbert Mao reaffirmed his interest in leading the party in the 2026 race, while FDC leaders Patrick Amuriat Oboi and Nathan Nandala Mafabi both picked nomination forms. In the FDC, the presidency of the party does not automatically guarantee the presidential ticket.
