According to accounts from the area, the woman tried to flee while carrying the child on her back. During the struggle, the suspect allegedly picked up a household pestle and attempted to strike his wife, but the blow instead hit the child.
The toddler later died from the injuries.
The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended by residents and handed over to police in the early hours of the morning.
Authorities said tensions rose following the arrest, with some residents attempting to confront officers and demanding that the suspect be handed over to them. Police intervened and transferred him to custody at a nearby station as investigations continue.
Neighbours told local leaders that the family had previously experienced domestic disputes, describing repeated incidents of late-night arguments.
Local officials have condemned the killing, calling for greater efforts to resolve domestic conflicts peacefully.
Police data indicates that while overall crime levels in Uganda have declined, domestic violence remains a significant concern.
