PLU Members to Protest Kenyan Media’s Reporting on Gen. Muhoozi

Members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) have announced plans to stage a protest at the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala next week, condemning what they describe as biased media coverage of Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Muhoozi, who serves as PLU chairman, leads the group under the umbrella of his father’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). The protest threats follow growing unrest in Kenya over the continued detention of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, who was allegedly abducted from Nairobi last November with the knowledge of Kenyan authorities.

The uproar was triggered by Kenya’s The Standard newspaper, which on its Friday, February 28 edition, ran a bold front-page headline: “Four-Star Brat”, featuring images of Gen. Muhoozi in military uniform and highlighting his controversial social media activity. Additionally, The Nairobian delved into the alleged Besigye-Byanyima-Museveni “love triangle,” further angering Muhoozi’s supporters.

Kasambya County MP and PLU General Secretary Daudi Kabanda announced that the group would hold a “powerful demonstration” at the Kenyan High Commission on Wednesday.

“They burned our High Commission last year, and we did not respond. Now, one of their newspapers has insulted our PLU chairman. This time, we will respond with full force,” Kabanda declared.

On Friday morning, Gen. Muhoozi posted a cryptic message on X, simply stating, “Uganda House in Nairobi, burning last year,” accompanied by an image of the Ugandan mission engulfed in flames. The post appeared to reference the attack on Uganda’s embassy in Kenya during last year’s Gen-Z protests.

Youth and Children’s Affairs Minister Balaam Barugahara, a staunch Muhoozi supporter, quickly echoed his sentiments.

“We cannot tolerate any offense to our national sovereignty. Supreme Leader Muhoozi Kainerugaba, we stand firmly behind you and will not sit by as disrespect escalates,” Barugahara stated.

Dr. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and long-time opponent of President Museveni, was charged with treachery and illegal possession of firearms by a military court last year. Following a Supreme Court ruling outlawing military tribunals in January, he was re-arraigned in a civilian court last week on charges of treason and misprision of treason.
