Panic as ‘Mbarara HIV’ TikTok Page Exposes Alleged HIV-Positive Individuals

A controversial TikTok account named Mbarara HIV has sparked fear and outrage in Mbarara City after posting photos and videos of individuals it claims are HIV-positive—without their consent.

The account has targeted local celebrities, entertainers, and socialites, prompting widespread condemnation for spreading stigma, violating privacy, and potentially breaching multiple Ugandan laws.

The anonymous account claims its mission is to “expose every person spreading HIV in Mbarara City,” drawing mixed reactions online—some users supporting it, while others describe it as a form of digital witch-hunting.

Several individuals featured have reported emotional distress, public humiliation, and professional damage. One victim said they were forced to test and reveal their status due to overwhelming pressure, while another reported their employer questioned them after seeing their name on the page.

Some accused persons have since posted negative HIV test results from the AIDS Information Centre. However, one individual allegedly attempted suicide and remains hospitalized.

Mbarara City Health Officer Dr. Keiruky Longino strongly condemned the account, warning that it undermines public health efforts by fueling stigma and discouraging testing and openness about HIV.

Legal experts have also spoken out. Lawyer Arnold Mugisha Musinguzi warned the account creators could face lawsuits and heavy penalties, while Joshua Tumukunde cited specific laws criminalizing the non-consensual disclosure of someone’s HIV status, punishable by up to five years in prison.

The Mbarara HIV account reflects a broader trend, with similar pages like kampalahiv and kasese.hiv emerging on TikTok, raising alarm over the growing weaponization of digital platforms to shame individuals based on their perceived health status.

Despite multiple complaints, TikTok has not removed the account, drawing criticism over its failure to moderate harmful content. Globally, the platform has faced scrutiny for allowing cyberbullying, misinformation, and data privacy violations.

Health officials and legal professionals in Uganda are now urging urgent intervention to take down the page, prosecute its operators, and safeguard the rights and dignity of those affected.
