Opposition MPs Vow to Return Controversial Shs100M Cash Bonanza

In a surprising shift, several opposition Members of Parliament who recently received Shs100 million have now formally pledged to reject the funds.

On Thursday morning, led by Acting Leader of the Opposition Muwanga Kivumbi, the MPs launched a campaign to sign a commitment list denouncing the cash, which has been widely criticized and labeled “evil money” believed to have originated from the president.

The move comes amid growing public backlash and intense scrutiny over the distribution of the money.

Joel Ssenyonyi, the official Leader of the Opposition who is currently abroad, warned that those who already accepted the money would eventually face repercussions.

“Signing the commitment is just the beginning. Those who have already taken the money will have to deal with the consequences,” Ssenyonyi stated.

The payout, reportedly involving all 529 MPs, has sparked questions regarding the legitimacy and origin of the funds.

Opposition legislators from parties including the Democratic Party (DP), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Justice Forum (JEEMA), People’s Progressive Party (PPP), and the National Unity Platform (NUP), along with some independent MPs aligned with the opposition, are said to have received the money.

Ssenyonyi affirmed that investigations are ongoing and vowed that accountability will follow for those involved.

“We are compiling information and will ensure accountability for anyone found to have received the funds,” he added.

This scenario mirrors last year’s controversy, when MPs received Shs40 million each, prompting NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi to demand a refund from party members.

The opposition remains firm on the need for transparency and responsible use of public funds, with the current saga intensifying public demand for answers.

As the probe unfolds, debate over the distribution of state funds among legislators continues to grow.
