Toxicology tests carried out by the Government Analytical Laboratory (GAL) have ruled out poisoning as the cause of Martha Ahumuza Murari’s sudden death. Ahumuza collapsed at Mezo Noir bar in Kololo and was later pronounced dead at Kampala Hospital on March 21.
Experts at GAL performed an in-depth toxicological examination on her internal organs using advanced techniques like chromatography and mass spectrometry. A forensic analyst confirmed that the tests found no presence of toxic substances.

The toxicology report has since been submitted to investigators at Kampala Metropolitan Police headquarters and is now a key component in shaping the investigation’s next steps.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed that both the postmortem and toxicology reports are complete and that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has reviewed the case file.
Based on the DPP’s guidance, the two initial suspects—Edward Mugabo, a cashier at Mezo Noir, and his brother Joseph Kalenzi—have been released on police bond while investigations continue.
Although details of the postmortem remain confidential, Onyango stated that the findings were shared with Ahumuza’s family. A family member disclosed that doctors attributed her death to internal bleeding in the brain and fluid accumulation in her chest, possibly caused by excessive vomiting.
The toxicology findings have shifted the investigation’s direction, steering it away from the earlier suspicion of poisoning. Authorities are now exploring other possible causes, pending further instructions from the DPP.
