Only One Survives as Air India Flight Crashes in India, 204 Bodies Recovered

At least 204 bodies have been recovered following the crash of an Air India flight that went down shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad in western India.

The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was carrying 242 people when it crashed into a residential complex housing medical professionals. Authorities are still determining how many of the victims were passengers and how many were on the ground.

Air India confirmed the flight had 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian on board.

Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik told ANI news agency that only one person survived the crash — the passenger in seat 11A, identified as British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. Indian media reports that he shared a photo of his boarding pass with journalists.

“Just 30 seconds after take-off, there was a loud explosion, and then the plane went down. It was all over in an instant,” he said.

Eyewitness accounts from the crash site included a mother who said her son survived by leaping from the second-floor window of the struck medical hostel.

The Tata Group, which owns Air India, has pledged 1 crore rupees (approximately £86,000) in compensation to the families of each victim. The company also committed to covering medical costs for the injured and to supporting the rebuilding of the BJ Medical hostel damaged in the crash.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and assured full assistance to victims’ families and the affected community.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson released a video message, calling it a “devastating day” and affirming that the airline’s full attention is on supporting passengers, crew, and their families.

Rescue and investigation teams continue to comb through the crash site as efforts persist to determine the cause of the disaster.
