The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has accused security forces of jeopardizing its chances in the upcoming Kawempe North by-election, with NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi alleging that police actions favored the opposition.
Despite expressing confidence in the party’s prospects, Odoi claimed that law enforcement’s conduct in Kawempe had disadvantaged the NRM candidate.

“I watched what happened in Kawempe and told my friends that it seemed like the police were campaigning for the opposition. It looked as though they went there specifically to undermine our NRM candidate,” he stated.
His remarks come amid mounting criticism of security agencies over allegations of violence and intimidation during the nomination process.
Opposition figures, including Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, have decried what they describe as excessive force by security operatives, particularly the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT), whose presence has raised concerns.
The by-election, scheduled for March 13, 2025, follows the passing of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. NRM’s candidate, Faridah Nambi, has been actively campaigning, urging supporters to stay committed despite the challenges.
Odoi’s statements underscore the rising tensions in the race, with both sides raising concerns over the electoral process.
As election day approaches, attention remains on how security forces will manage the process to ensure a transparent and credible election.
