NRM Registrar Arrested Over Election Malpractice in Sironko

Police in Sironko District, Eastern Uganda, have detained an official of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party for allegedly committing electoral fraud during the party’s parish and ward-level primaries.

The suspect, Edgar Watsibaya, served as the registrar for Masabasi Ward in Mutufu Town Council. He is accused of conspiring with another local official to fabricate election results by filling out declaration forms with the names of preferred candidates—despite no voting having taken place.

According to Elgon Region Police Spokesperson P. Rogers Taitika, the alleged misconduct was reported on Monday during the NRM grassroots elections.

“This incident occurred only in Masabasi Ward; elections proceeded without major issues in the remaining 224 parishes and wards of Sironko District,” said SP Taitika.

Watsibaya is currently being held at Sironko Central Police Station and is likely to face charges related to electoral malpractice.

As a result of the irregularities, elections in Masabasi Ward have been postponed and will be conducted at a later date.

Police have issued a stern warning to all officials involved in the NRM electoral process, stressing that anyone caught violating electoral procedures will be prosecuted.
