Police in eastern Uganda have arrested Richard Mwanja, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) registrar in Namutumba district, over allegations of manipulating results during the party’s recent parliamentary primaries.
The arrest was ordered by the district’s Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Fred Bangu, who confirmed that Mwanja will soon appear in court to face charges related to electoral malpractice.

“We have arrested the NRM registrar, Richard Mwanja, and he will face charges for his actions,” Bangu told reporters on Wednesday.
Mwanja is accused of announcing conflicting winners for the same positions, including in Busiki County, Busiki North, and the district’s Woman MP seat. He is also alleged to have declared results in Bukono County without proper tallying.
The arrest comes amid growing tensions and complaints following the NRM primaries, which have drawn criticism over irregularities, low voter turnout, and disputed outcomes in several regions. NRM’s internal tribunal has already begun receiving petitions from disgruntled candidates across the country.
Officials say Mwanja’s prosecution is intended to restore public trust in the party’s electoral processes and send a warning against malpractice within the ruling party’s structures.
This is a developing story.
