Police are investigating the death of a Senior Four student at Naalya Senior Secondary School’s Bweyogerere campus after the learner was found dead in what is being treated as a suspected suicide.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident happened on Wednesday evening when the student’s body was discovered hanging inside a toilet block in the boys’ section of the school.
“The school administration alerted police immediately, and our team of detectives and Scene of Crime officers from Kira Division Police visited the scene, documented evidence, recorded statements from witnesses, and later conveyed the body to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem,” Owoyesigyire said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the student was last seen entering the toilet block shortly before the body was discovered. Police also recovered a handwritten note believed to have been written by the deceased.
“The note has been secured, and its contents are being examined as part of the investigation. Police extend condolences to the family, friends, and the entire school community during this difficult time. Investigations are ongoing and further details will be communicated once available,” Owoyesigyire added.
The latest case comes amid growing concern over a number of suspected suicides involving students in schools and universities across Uganda.
Last month, 19-year-old Vanisa Namakoye, a Senior Five student at Mbale Progressive Secondary School, was found dead at her home in Bumutoto Ward, Industrial Division, in a suspected suicide.
Her death occurred only days after that of her 16-year-old friend, Catherine Nelima, who was also found dead in a similar suspected suicide case in Bukisukye Lower Cell, Bumutoto Ward.
In March 2026, 20-year-old Juliana Genevieve Mutyaba, a student at Mengo Secondary School, died shortly after the release of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results, in which she had scored 19 points.
During the same month, another student was found dead in the boys’ dormitory at Kololo Junior School’s Kayunga-Gombe branch, leading to the temporary closure of the school while police conducted investigations.
A year earlier, in March 2025, 19-year-old Senior Six student Alvin Ssekandi also died in what relatives described as a case linked to pressure associated with the UACE examinations.
Education officials have expressed concern over increasing mental health challenges among learners, saying factors such as examination pressure, high academic expectations and limited access to counselling services are contributing to emotional distress. They have called for stronger mental health support systems in schools and more open discussions about students’ wellbeing.
