Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga has announced plans to sue National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi and Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana over alleged defamatory remarks made during a press conference on May 6, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Kampala.
Kyagulanyi and Ssewanyana allegedly made statements suggesting Mpuuga was involved in the arrest and detention of Ssewanyana and the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, former Kawempe North MP.

Addressing journalists in Kampala, Mpuuga — who previously served as NUP’s Deputy President for the Buganda region and is now the National Coordinator of the Democratic Alliance (DA)—accused Kyagulanyi of continuously targeting him for political gain.
“He has turned me into his favorite topic, turning my name into a tool for personal and political profit. I have allowed him space to complain, sing, and write about me, but I believe he has earned enough from dragging my name through the mud,” Mpuuga said.
Mpuuga further noted that the remarks linked him to the infamous Masaka killings that occurred between 2020 and 2021.
“He claimed to have information that I and some colleagues from Masaka were involved in the killings. When I heard it, I was momentarily shaken but quickly gathered myself,” Mpuuga added.
As a result, Mpuuga said he has instructed his legal team to file a defamation lawsuit against both Kyagulanyi and Ssewanyana.
“To bring clarity to these accusations, we shall meet in court. Maybe the courts — along with the victims’ families still seeking justice — will help shed light on what really happened in Masaka. Since they claim to know more, they should say it before a judge,” he stated.
Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya were previously arrested in connection with a series of machete attacks in the Masaka sub-region that left 26 people dead between March and June 2021. Their case is still in pre-trial before the International Crimes Division (ICD).
Ssegirinya, who was elected in 2021, died earlier this year at Lubaga Hospital after being transferred between hospitals in Uganda, Kenya, and the Netherlands. He and Ssewanyana had spent over 500 days in detention and were re-arrested shortly after being granted bail on September 21, 2021. They later faced additional murder charges related to killings in Lwengo District.
