MP Bwanika Threatens to Quit NUP Over Ignored Concerns, Issues 10-Point Ultimatum

Kimaanya-Kabonera MP Abed Bwanika has warned he may leave the National Unity Platform (NUP) due to what he describes as the party’s persistent failure to address key issues raised by its members.

During a Sunday appearance on NBS Television, Bwanika expressed disappointment with the NUP leadership, citing their neglect of concerns he previously raised—including the party’s silence on matters like homosexuality. He revealed he has compiled a list of ten pressing issues for the party to consider and demanded an official response.

“As a leader, I find it necessary to raise issues for the party’s attention. I have now presented a 10-point document on matters that I believe are vital for our growth and unity,” Bwanika said. “If the party treats this document the same way it ignored the one on homosexuality, it would be clear there’s no room for me in NUP.”

Bwanika is among several MPs who were recently given a 30-day ultimatum by the party to explain perceived disloyalty or risk expulsion. NUP accuses them of distancing themselves from party activities, warning that failure to clarify their positions could result in loss of support for the 2026 elections.

Other MPs reportedly facing similar pressure include Mathias Mpuuga, Jimmy Lwanga, Twaha Kagabo, and Joyce Bagala.

Bwanika criticized the party’s handling of internal disputes, arguing that public threats and blackmail are not the right way to address disagreements. He urged the leadership to create a proper forum for open dialogue.

“As an MP elected on the NUP ticket, I expected the party leadership to meet with me and discuss my concerns, not go to the media and tarnish my image,” he said.

In defense of the ultimatum, NUP deputy president Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi claimed the party had exercised patience and had reached out to the dissenting MPs without success. “Many of them are close friends. I’ve tried to reach them personally, but in vain,” Kivumbi said.

But Bwanika refuted this, saying Kivumbi had never directly contacted him. He confirmed that his list of issues would officially be delivered to the party starting Monday.
