Moses Ali, 86, Collects NRM Nomination Forms from Car Ahead of 2026 Polls

Retired General and Second Deputy Prime Minister Moses Ali has collected nomination forms to seek re-election as the Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In a scene that distinguished him from the many enthusiastic contenders at the NRM Electoral Commission offices in Kampala, the veteran politician remained inside his vehicle while party officials brought the forms to him through the window.

The brief exchange took place near a tent set up to serve incoming candidates, most of whom queued for long hours under the scorching sun. Unlike the others, General Ali stayed comfortably seated, lowering his car window just enough to allow journalists a quick photo. He did not address the media.

General Moses Ali is a renowned military officer and seasoned statesman. Over the years, he has held several top government roles, including serving as Third Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament (2011–2016). He was later appointed First Deputy Prime Minister (2016–2021) and currently serves as Second Deputy Prime Minister.

Though physically reserved, his appearance at the nomination venue highlighted his ongoing commitment to political life. Born in 1939, Ali remains one of the oldest and most respected figures in both the NRM and Uganda’s broader political sphere.

The NRM officially began its nomination process on Monday, drawing a large number of hopeful candidates from across the country. Aspirants are required to pick up nomination forms, gather signatures from registered party members in their constituencies, and return the completed forms by June 17.

While many younger candidates used the opportunity to mobilize supporters and speak to the media, General Ali’s quiet and minimalist approach served as a reminder of his seniority and stature.

His decision to contest again comes amid ongoing discussions about generational leadership change within the NRM. Nevertheless, his supporters in Adjumani argue that his vast experience and influence remain vital to both the party and the constituency.

The NRM’s internal elections are set to continue throughout June, with momentum building at both local and national levels ahead of the 2026 polls.
