Mbale, Uganda – Police in Mbale City are investigating the death of a 26-year-old woman who was struck and killed while attempting to break up a fight involving her husband.
The deceased, identified as Aisha Masibu, a vendor at Kikindu Market, was reportedly hit on the head with a stone as she tried to separate her husband—a security guard at a local parking yard—from two men who had attacked him on Monday.
According to preliminary police findings, the confrontation began after a dispute over Shs2,000 allegedly owed by one of the parking yard’s clients. Witnesses said the two suspects, aged 19 and 24, stormed the yard demanding to see the debtor. When the security guard stopped them from entering, an argument ensued, escalating into a physical fight.

“The two started assaulting the guard, and when his wife tried to help, they hit her with a stone, killing her instantly,” said Ismail Gidudu, a boda boda rider who witnessed the incident.
The suspects reportedly fled to their home in Kisenyi Cell, Nabuyonga Ward, leaving the guard seriously injured. Enraged residents later surrounded the suspects’ house, attempting to lynch them, but were dispersed by police and military officers led by Mbale Northern Division DPC SP Mubarak Sunday and Mbale Central DPC SP Kenneth Bakashaba.
Eyewitness Amina Namakoye said the standoff lasted nearly five hours, during which property worth millions of shillings was destroyed and looted. Some members of the mob also hurled stones at security officers.
Police later confirmed the arrest of the two suspects, who are now in custody facing murder charges.
“The suspects killed Masibu and then fled to hide in their home. We managed to apprehend them safely,” said Elgon Region Police Spokesperson Rogers Taitika. “We remind the public that criminal responsibility lies with individuals—vigilante justice and destruction of property are unacceptable.”
Authorities and residents identified the main suspect, known as Yusuf alias Fifty Fifty, as a repeat offender. Nabuyonga Zone Security Secretary Seku Abdulkarim said Yusuf had recently been released from prison after serving a six-month sentence and had since returned to criminal behaviour.
Mbale Assistant Resident City Commissioner Hussein Kadimba condemned the violence, urging parents to monitor their children closely and warning that drug abuse among young people was fuelling crime in the city.
Masibu’s body was taken to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
