Masaka Court Denies Bail to Bobi Wine’s Bodyguards, Saying Their Release Could Endanger Public and Journalists

A High Court judge in Masaka has refused to grant bail to four bodyguards of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, saying their release could pose risks to the public and interfere with ongoing investigations.

The court was filled with heightened security on the day of the ruling as supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) gathered to hear the outcome.

Two of the accused, Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi, appeared via video link from Luzira Prison, while their co-accused, Grace Wakabi and Mugumya Gadaph, were brought to court in person.

The ruling was delivered by Chief Magistrate Simon Ntoroko on behalf of Justice Fatuma Nanziri.

Bail application rejected

The defence team, led by lawyer Sam Muyizzi, criticised the absence of state prosecutors during the session. Despite this, the court proceeded with the judgment.

In a detailed written decision, Justice Nanziri said the sureties presented were not credible enough to guarantee the accused would return to court if released. She added that the group faces serious charges, including aggravated robbery and assault, and could intimidate witnesses or destabilise their communities if freed.

“There is a credible risk that the accused could interfere with witnesses or disrupt the areas where they were previously active,” the judge noted.

Reaction from NUP

Outside the court, supporters of the opposition party staged demonstrations in protest of the ruling. Inside, one of the accused, Mugumya Gadaph, urged colleagues and followers to “remain strong” and continue their political struggle.

Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, who attended the hearing, said the legal team had presented a strong case but respected the court’s decision. “We did all we could to argue for their release. What concerns us is the pattern emerging from such rulings,” he added.

Justice Nanziri ordered that the trial should begin without further delay. However, NUP officials condemned the decision as politically motivated.

“This is a deliberate move to weaken the opposition, presented as a judicial process,” said NUP member Majerani Kazibwe.
