According to Sipi Region Police Spokesperson Mr. Fredmark Chesang, the altercation began when Cheptoyek, who was drinking at a bar owned by a woman identified as Ms. Caro Nabukwasi, reportedly bought waragi (a locally distilled alcoholic beverage) for her brother-in-law, Simon Mangusho, also known as Simon Kambuya. This act is believed to have angered her husband.
Chesang said that after leaving the bar in anger, Arapsoi returned home to collect a panga (machete), came back to the bar, and allegedly attacked his wife, striking her on the head and hand.
Cheptoyek was rushed by bystanders to Ngenge Health Center III but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival due to their severity.
Police confirmed that Arapsoi was arrested and is now in custody as investigations are underway.
Mr. Chesang urged couples to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence.
According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report, 14,073 domestic violence cases were recorded in 2024, slightly down from 14,681 in 2023. Mityana Police Station had the highest number of cases last year with 409, followed by Kwania (386), Busia (307), Kween (289), and Luwero (287).
