Police in Bushenyi District, western Uganda, are investigating a suspected suicide involving a 20-year-old student from Kampala International University (KIU), Ishaka campus.

John Lukoma’s body was found early Friday morning hanging from a tree near a male hostel on campus, according to Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson Apollo Tayebwa.

“On May 9, 2025, a KIU security guard, Patrick Muganga, informed us that around 6:40 a.m., during his patrol, he discovered Lukoma’s body hanging from an avocado tree near the hostel toilets,” Tayebwa said during a press briefing.

Police have opened a suspected suicide case at Bushenyi Central Police Station. The body was taken to the KIU Teaching Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. Authorities promised to release the findings once available.

Tayebwa called on the public, especially young people, to seek support when struggling with depression or stress instead of turning to suicide. He emphasized the importance of speaking with friends or reaching out to professional counselors.

Lukoma’s roommate, Patrick Okoume (21), revealed that Lukoma had been under severe stress due to financial difficulties.

“He had been troubled by issues around paying tuition and daily expenses. He constantly worried whether he would manage to finish his course. That may have contributed to his decision,” Okoume said.

While university officials did not comment publicly, a message believed to be from the university administration circulated among students, urging them to make use of available counseling services.

“Whether or not you personally knew Lukoma John, this loss has affected us all. I know many of you feel scared, sad, or confused. Please remember you’re not alone — we are here for you,” the letter read.

Recent statistics from the 2024 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) highlight a growing mental health crisis among Ugandan youth, with over 272,000 cases of suicidal ideation reported, including tens of thousands among individuals aged 15 to 24.
