Kasese RDC Gives 3,500 Displaced Residents 24-Hour Eviction Notice

Authorities in Kasese have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to more than 3,500 people who have been camping outside the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for the past three months over unresolved land disputes.

The district security committee directed the group to vacate the premises by midday tomorrow, warning that they would be forcibly removed if they refused to comply. Officials cited health and safety risks linked to the prolonged occupation.

“We have tolerated them for three months, but the situation has become a health hazard and a security risk. By tomorrow at noon, no one should still be here,” RDC Lt. Joe Walusimbi told reporters, urging community leaders to encourage a peaceful exit.

The displaced residents, however, say they will not leave until government delivers on promises to resolve their grievances.

“We are not here by choice. We lost our land and have nowhere else to go. Minister Mayanja pledged to return our land titles after three months, and that deadline has not yet expired,” said Mijumbi Bitamazire, one of the affected.

Another resident, Martin Ofono, added: “This is the only place where we feel government can listen to us. Without land and safe settlement, we cannot move.”

Earlier this year, Lands Minister Sam Mayanja assured the families that their land disputes would be settled within three months, including the issuance of legal titles. The residents say they are still waiting for that intervention.

Security around the RDC’s office has now been reinforced ahead of the deadline, with entry restricted and fears of confrontation if the group resists eviction.
