In Kanungu district, crime was treated with extreme contempt after a 35-year-old man was lynched and his body mutilated by a mob for allegedly stealing Shs300,000 in Nyakasharara Cell, Kihembe Parish, Kihembe Sub County, Kanungu District.
Mr. Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, described the incident as “a case of murder by mob justice.”
“The case was reported to Kanyantorogo Police Post by Mr. Elininious Tumwesigire, 45, the GISO of Kihembe Town Council and a resident of Nyakasharara Cell,” Mr. Maate added.

“It is alleged that the deceased entered Ms. (Beatrice) Bajumwa’s home (on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at around 2:00 PM) and took Shs 300,000. An alarm was raised, drawing residents, including army officers on guard duty,” Mr. Maate elaborated.
Joseph was caught and handed over to the LC1 Chairperson of Kihembe Central, Mr. Frank Kazoba.
However, an unknown mob later overpowered Mr. Kazoba, forcefully taking the suspect from him before lynching him.
“After killing the suspect, the mob mutilated his body, cutting it into pieces,” Mr. Maate revealed.
Police visited and documented the crime scene and transported the body to Kanungu Katate Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination.
Statements were recorded from key witnesses at the scene. “No suspects have been arrested yet,” Mr. Maate said.
The deceased was identified as Joseph, approximately 35 years old, the son of Kembabazi, who has had no known place of residence.
