Kamuli Storm Claims Life of Young Girl, Leaves Dozens Homeless

A powerful rainstorm swept through parts of Kamuli District in eastern Uganda on Tuesday, leaving a five-year-old girl dead and displacing dozens of residents, local authorities reported on Wednesday.

The young victim, daughter of George Kibumba, tragically lost her life when a wall of their home collapsed during the storm in Bulebi zone, Butansi Sub-county.

“We were inside the house when bricks from one of the walls fell and struck my daughter. She died instantly,” Kibumba recounted to Monitor. He added that the storm also destroyed his banana plantation and left two of his other children—the deceased girl’s siblings—seriously injured.

The storm caused extensive damage in the villages of Bulebi, Buleta, and Nakyaka, destroying over 20 houses and ravaging gardens, local officials said.

Butansi Sub-county chairperson Emmanuel Waiswa Nsongolo appealed to the government for urgent intervention. “Many residents are now without shelter or food. We urge agencies like the Office of the Prime Minister to step in,” he said.

James Kalulu, chairperson of Bulebi zone, said efforts to gather detailed information on the number of affected households were ongoing, and called for an expedited response from authorities.

Adonia Mafumo Wansadha, Kamuli’s Deputy Resident District Commissioner, confirmed the casualty and widespread damage. He said the Chief Administrative Officer had been directed to conduct a comprehensive assessment through the Environment and Natural Resources department for submission to the Office of the Prime Minister.

Uganda frequently experiences severe weather during its rainy seasons, often resulting in floods, landslides, and property damage—particularly in vulnerable rural communities.
