Kamuli Man Kills Wife Amid Suspected Dispute Over HIV Status

Police in Uganda’s Kamuli District have launched a manhunt after a 23-year-old woman was found dead in her home, with her husband emerging as the main suspect.

The victim, identified as Joan Mbwali, was a resident of Buyonga Zone in Kitayunjwa Sub-county. Her body was discovered on the evening of 2 August by her landlord, Ashman Bwamiki, who had brought back her child after playtime with neighbors.

Mr Bwamiki told local leaders that it was unusual for Ms Mbwali not to collect her child by nightfall. Concerned, he and others forced open her door and found her lying lifeless on the floor.

Police were quickly notified, and her body was transported to Kamuli General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Local council chairperson Lameka Waiswa said the couple had lived together for nearly a year. He suggested that the cause of the killing could be linked to health-related issues.

“We found four bottles of antiretroviral medication in the house,” he said. “It’s possible she was taking the drugs in secret, and this discovery may have sparked conflict.”

Mr Waiswa urged couples to openly discuss their health status and seek counselling when necessary, adding that many discordant partners live peacefully when there is trust and communication.

Busoga North regional police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed the investigation is underway and said the suspect remains at large.

Mr Kasadha linked the killing to wider concerns about rising domestic violence, often driven by drug abuse in the area. He noted that this was the third such case in Kamuli in recent months.

In March, 24-year-old Mastula Mukoda was beheaded by her husband shortly after their wedding. The following month, 15-year-old Mable Kasiri was allegedly killed by her 22-year-old husband, Denis Kasaata.

“Drug use among idle youth is contributing to a disturbing increase in domestic violence and homicides,” Mr Kasadha said. “We are working to address the root causes and bring perpetrators to justice.”
