Four Uganda Police officers from the Flying Squad Unit—Detective Superintendent James Besigye (38), Detective Corporal Simon Owona (36), Detective Constable Pracid Abdul Mulangira (33), and Detective Constable Monday Tibaijuka (35)—have been further remanded to Luzira Prison following an adjournment of their aggravated robbery case. The hearing, held under tight security at Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court, was postponed due to the absence of the designated trial magistrate, Frank Namanya, with Grade One Magistrate Andrew Katurubuki stepping in to issue the ruling.

The postponement came as state prosecutor Mahatima Odongo informed the court that investigations were still ongoing. With no objection from the defense, the case was pushed to July 29 for further mention.
The four officers, previously criticized for concealing their faces in court, complied with a prior directive from Magistrate Namanya to remove their hoods—a moment that sparked visible reactions from the courtroom and media.
The officers are accused of robbing John Vian Tumukunde on May 9, 2025, in Kampala’s Nakawa Division, reportedly stealing one kilogram of gold worth $105,000 and $1,000 in cash while armed with firearms. Their charges fall under Uganda’s Penal Code sections addressing aggravated robbery involving deadly weapons.
This case, involving high-ranking law enforcement personnel, has attracted significant public attention—underscoring the broader concern about police involvement in organized criminal activity and the integrity of justice processes in Uganda.
