Police in eastern Uganda have arrested five individuals in connection with violent clashes that broke out in Luuka District following recent National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries.
The unrest occurred on the evening of 25 July in Buwologoma village, Bukanga sub-county. According to authorities, the violence was allegedly incited by supporters of Peter Kafuko Mulyandawo, a former aspirant for the NRM LC5 flag, who are accused of attacking supporters of the declared winner.

“We have registered a case of arson after a butchery was set on fire, as well as another case involving malicious damage to property,” said ASP Michael Kasadha, spokesperson for the Busoga North Regional Police.
Police moved quickly to contain the situation, arresting five suspects believed to be involved. Investigations remain ongoing, and authorities say further arrests may follow.
“Further inquiries are underway to establish the full extent of what happened and identify additional suspects,” Kasadha added.
The police have called on the public to remain calm and urged losing candidates and their supporters to use lawful channels to resolve disputes.
“If anyone is dissatisfied with the election outcome, they should follow the appropriate procedures to have their concerns addressed,” the police statement read.
The NRM primaries have been marked by sporadic violence across the country. In Kamuli District, at least one person was killed, while in Nakaseke, clashes left several injured and caused damage to property. More than 180 people have so far been arrested in connection with election-related unrest.
