A court in western Uganda has remanded a 45-year-old woman accused of forcing her eight-year-old stepson to swallow sewing needles and pieces of broken glass.
Juliet Tushabeomwe appeared before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mitooma District on Thursday, where she faced charges of aggravated torture and attempted murder.

Prosecutors allege that between August 2025 and April 2026, the woman subjected the child, Samuel Akamumpa, to repeated abuse at their home in Rweibare village.
The court heard that the boy was allegedly forced to ingest dozens of sewing needles and fragments of glass, resulting in serious health complications.
Ms Tushabeomwe denied the charges before Grade One Magistrate Gibson Muhangi, who ordered that she be remanded to prison until next month.
Relatives said concerns were raised after the child became seriously ill several weeks ago. He was taken for medical examinations, including scans, which reportedly revealed multiple metallic objects inside his stomach.
The boy was later transferred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where doctors carried out surgery earlier this week. Family members say 46 sewing needles were removed from his digestive system during the operation.
The child remains under medical care as investigations continue. Family members have appealed to authorities to ensure the case is thoroughly investigated.
