A 16-year-old boy has been sentenced to three years in a juvenile facility after pleading guilty to the murder of his 23-year-old girlfriend, Latifah Wotali, during their first in-person meeting. The sentencing was delivered by Justice Margaret Mutonyi at the High Court in Kampala on April 16, 2025.

According to court records, the two had been communicating online before Wotali visited the boy’s residence in Gganda Jembe 1 Zone, Wakiso District, on April 17, 2024. During the visit, the boy reportedly increased the volume of the music before committing the fatal act.
Justice Mutonyi noted that, despite the boy’s guilty plea, the severity of the crime warranted the maximum sentence permissible under Uganda’s juvenile justice system. She expressed concerns about the current system’s ability to deter serious offenses and provide adequate accountability.
Under Ugandan law, the maximum sentence for a juvenile offender is three years. The judge emphasized the need for a review of the juvenile justice system to ensure it adequately addresses grievous crimes committed by minors.
